Interior Designers Swear by This Rule of Designing that You Should Use!
Home decor is a kind of art that a lot of people are impressed with and constantly want to explore it.
That said, it is easy to feel like youโre stuck in a loop, or sometimes donโt even know where to begin the redecoration process.
So, for all our special self-acclaimed home decor artists, we decided to help you with a simple:
ย
60-30-10 Rule
ย
Explaining the 60-30-10 Rule
This is one rule that is not meant to be broken. It will ensure that you can create the ideal color palette for your spaces.
According to the rule,
- 60% of your room should have one color, the dominant one
- 30% of the room should be a texture or paint, or the secondary color
- 10% of you room should be accents
Sounds quite simple, doesnโt it?
Thatโs because it is.
ย
ย
Letโs understand the application of this home decor rule to get the best out of it.
ย
Using the 60-30-10 Rule
The dominant color, i.e. the 60% portion of your space will be the overall color scheme of your room. So, letโs say you were to pick blush pink as your dominant color, your room would be called a blush pink room.

ย
Examples:
- Wall color being the priority
- Rugs
- Sofa and arm chairs
- Accent pieces (Like the Surreal Thinker Table Accent)
- Large statement pieces
ย
ย
ย
The next step would be to add your 30% of the color. This secondary color palette will be the one that acts as a supporter of the main color youโve picked. Ideally, it should be one that is in contrast with the dominant color, but could also be slightly similar.ย
ย
Let's make your home decor a class apart!
ย
ย
To be honest, it really depends on what YOU like!
Examples:
- Painted furniture pieces
- Curtains
- Side tables and chairs
- Small statement pieces (Like the Golden Bloom Bookend)
ย
ย
The last part is your 10% to be decorated with an accent color for your home decor. Depending on what your style is, you could pick something thatโs neutral or bold, or something soft. Itโs going to give your room a character.

- Throw pillows (Weโve got a great collection you should check out!)
- Textured accents
- Different pieces of art
ย
Finally, you have to go through the process of picking out a color scheme.
ย
ย
ย
Here are a couple of ideas that you can explore:
- Complementary color scheme is where youโre going to select a warm color and a cool color, both that fall on the opposite side of the color wheel.
- Monochrome is a way of using only one color, by using hues of it for different parts of the design rule.
- Split complementary is when you add to the mix a 3rd completely different color, that is hopefully something similar to your secondary color.
- Analogous is when you pick out 3 similar colors from the color wheel with the one in the middle being the dominant one.
ย
There you have it!

A cool and simple design rule to live by when going through the home decor process.
